Atlanta, GA: Atlanta Pride announced today that the 2014 Atlanta Pride Cultural Exhibit will be entitled, Deconstructing Binaries: Art for Social Justice.
This component that is a part of the annual Atlanta Pride Festival is now in it’s 8th year. The presentation is intended to highlight different aspects of the LGBTQ experience through culture, politics and human rights and is sponsored by the Lloyd E. Russell Foundation.
Deconstructing Binaries is a community-based public art project that explores and challenges mainstream binary visual representations of gender on public restroom signage. Deconstructing Binaries seeks to explore the social concept of gender and to bring awareness to the multiplicity of gender identities by encouraging businesses and public places to actively support a diversity of gender identities. Inspired by a sign from the Parsons School of Design that reads, “Anyone can use this restroom, regardless of your gender identity or expression,” Deconstructing Binaries promotes a culture of gender inclusivity as a form of social justice for all.
Atlanta Pride Executive Director, Buck Cooke, said of the display, “Each year the Cultural Exhibit highlights important issues in our community. I am delighted Atlanta Pride was invited to join the other sponsor organizations of Deconstructing Binaries to join the project and use the Cultural Exhibit to spark dialogues about gender and how we reinforce an unnecessary and often hurtful binary.”
Atlanta Pride Festival Attendees can find the exhibit located on the Bridge across Lake Clara Meer at Piedmont Park throughout the weekend. The exhibit will be open from 10a-7p on Saturday andSunday.
Partner organizations for this project include: WonderRoot, Georgia Equality, Charis Books and More, TilTT, JustUsATL, Feminist Women’s Health Center and Atlanta Pride.
